Hi everyone! I’m Karla Carter-Smith from Nova Scotia, Canada — a line dance instructor, choreographer, and lifelong lover of music and dance. My dance journey started as a child, twirling around the kitchen with my mom to whatever music she was listening to, which could have been anything from our much loved Nova Scotia fiddlers, to Country, to Rock n’ Roll, anything went, as long as we could move to it. By the late 80’s I was totally addicted to the line dance craze that hit the nation and a passion for teaching and creating dances of my own was formed, I felt like I finally found my “home”.
Being able to teach others and create a space where they can step away from the stresses of everyday life, even if only for a little while, is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. Watching people gain confidence, share moments of laughter, and enjoy the magic of music and movement reminds me why I fell in love with dance in the first place.
But if there’s one thing that brings me the greatest joy, it’s watching people smile, laugh, and lose themselves in the music while dancing one of my choreographies. Knowing that something I created has brought people together, given them a reason to dance, or simply brought a little more happiness into their day is a feeling that is truly hard to put into words.
To know that a dance I’ve created or a class I’ve taught can help someone feel lighter, forget their worries, and leave with a smile and a happy heart is a gift I will always cherish. It is truly one of the greatest honors of my life to share my passion for dance and see others embrace it as their own.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to choreograph dances enjoyed by dancers around the world, including Your Backyard,(used as a competition dance back in the 2000’s),Sofia, Twinkle Waltz, Second Hand Emotion, Turn the Radio Up (co-choreographed with Jose Miguel Belloque Vane and Nicole LeBrun) and Choosin Texas(Intermediate version) are just a few.
Dance continues to inspire me every day, and I’m excited for many more opportunities to teach, create, connect, and keep the fun going. 💃❤️
